A delegation from the Malta Insurance Association, led by the Director General, Mr. Adrian Galea paid a courtesy visit to the Police Commissioner, Mr. Lawrence Cutajar. The visit was intended to further the collaborative relationship between the Police Force and the MIA.
The ensuing discussions focussed on such issues as the improved enforcement of traffic regulations, the circulation of foreign-plated vehicles in Malta and the content of police reports required by Insurance Companies in respect of Traffic Accidents and Property Damage.
As a result of the 15 breathalyzer kits donated by the MIA in December 2015, the Police Force is nowadays better equipped at detecting motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, thus making our roads a safer place to drive. Coupled to the Police checks being carried out regularly on local roads, this has resulted in an increase of motorists charged in court, as evidenced by the news snippets featured on TISPOL (European Traffic Police Network) website. Measures are in place to ease the flow of traffic and through the donation of digital cameras made by the MIA, the Police are also equipped with the necessary equipment to take photos in the case of collisions as much as traffic Wardens are.
Both sides expressed their agreement that more forceful regulations need to be implemented and that the introduction of penalty points for all motorists should be encouraged. They also augured that their existing collaboration would improve further.
