The Insurance Association Malta welcomes the increased enforcement against abusive driving practices, particularly in public spaces meant to be shared and enjoyed safely by everyone.
In recent years, the roads leading to and surrounding Ta’ Qali have increasingly become a magnet for drifting and excessive speeding, especially on weekends and late evenings. This is very concerning given that these same roads are frequently used by joggers, walkers and families, and remain poorly lit in several areas.
For too long, enforcement has focused primarily on drink- and drug-driving. While essential, this alone is not enough. Overspeeding, mobile phone distraction, running red lights and other reckless behaviours continue to put lives at risk every single day.
Our roads are not racetracks. Every dangerous manoeuvre endangers innocent road users, particularly the most vulnerable. Strong, visible enforcement sends a clear message: unsafe driving will not be tolerated.
We commend the authorities for taking steps to improve road safety and encourage continued investment in enforcement, infrastructure and public awareness.
Safer roads are a shared responsibility… and a benefit to our entire community.
