How likely is your EV to catch fire?… Turns out electric vehicles often get bad rep, but the facts tell a different story. According to Civil Protection Department representative David Borg Saydon there's a greater chance of a petrol or diesel engine catching fire, than an EV — 1% as opposed to 0.004%.
The Insurance Association Malta held two informative sessions this week, in collaboration with the CPD, specifically tailored for tow-truck operators. These sessions form part of IAM’s aim to highlight the unique challenges of handling an electric vehicle. With Malta’s targets set to have 65,000 EVs on the road by 2030, knowing how to handle an EV in an emergency is becoming increasingly vital.
Borg Saydon emphasised a crucial safety tip: If you see a fire, walk away… be it at home or close to a car. Today’s households burn faster and hotter due to the high amount of plastic, whose raw material is crude oil; while EV fires can create toxic vapours due to thermal runaway.
