How Malta is helping set EU vehicle safety standards
Standards should not be voluntary… The Insurance Association Malta welcomes the important role the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has in being an active contributor to the vehicle safety standards.
The authority’s role is to verify that the vehicle placed on the local market meets the agreed safety and environmental standards, and once it does, the approval will be recognised in all 27 member states and in many countries beyond Europe.
The Insurance Association remarks that it is equally important for vehicles to retain their safety credentials on an on-going basis, especially after they undergo repairs following a collision.
The Association has been vocal about quality vehicle repairs and still awaits an updated version of the local vehicle repair standards (SM 1400.2013), which acknowledges the current reality through increased usage of electric vehicles.
Furthermore, IAM, as the body representing insurance companies in Malta, is calling for these standards to be made mandatory and not left to voluntary compliance.
We believe such a move would strengthen public confidence as local and European authorities push for increased EV usage, while better safeguarding consumer interests.
